Excellently done. I love the Balbec parts. I was a lad growing up in Llandudno when I first read Proust and their respective Grand Hotels coalesced in my imagination.

All PL OK

Two edits are needed -

At 1:31 you read "crusts" for "crests";

and at 7:06 you began the sentence from "At Combray..." and then restarted it at 7:16 - so need to remove the aborted passage 7:06 through to 7:16.

Otherwise fine.

Hi

There are 3 unedited repeats in Section 18:

@36:01 The sentence: "But this time she must have reckoned ... as though to a grown-up person." Repeated in entirety from 36:21.
@41:58 "Oh well, you know ... condescension." Repeated to correct final word quoted.
@43:20 from "Yes, I made a mistake on purpose" to "Baronne d'Ange like that." - repeated from 43:36.

All the best
Martin

The three offending passages are now edited out. It's ironic that the third was: "Yes, I made a mistake on purpose" but I didn't do them on purpose, honest!

If I'm making any egregious errors in pronouncing French names or places feel free to tell me. Apart from a single daytrip to Boulogne 30 years ago I have never actually been to France so my French pronunciation is, erm, not brilliant. One day I will go to Combray-Illiers but my daughter will have to be a few years older.

Hi

Now marked PL OK.

The only name which has made me positively wince so far was a couple of sections back when you took the final s from the Baron de Charlus. Definitely a hissing sound is called for when he returns - Sharr-L/i ɡʁɛk/ SS.

Good job I asked. I really couldn't get away with mispronouncing him throughout! I think I was assuming that it would be like the silent S in Camus. Apparently the French are divided on whether Charlus should be pronounced with or without a final s but "le plupart" pronounce it with and Neville Jason and John Rowe's versions do too. I've tried re-recording the offending clause (Section 12 around 14.57) but the difference in sound between the recordings makes it stick out jarringly. (I think my latest recordings have a worse sound quality. I don't know if it's the microphone, the computer or the recording levels). I'll certainly put a final s on in future occurrences of the Baron's name and I may come back to Section 12 later but, for the time being, I think we'll have to let that mispronunciation through. Sorry.

Hi

Section 19 is all PL OK, except for a pronunciation detail, which you have asked me to note where appropriate.

You have started in this section to award Mme de Villeparisis an extra syllable (a final i). Like Charlus and other quasi-Latin or Italianate old family names (e.g. de Médicis), it's usual to pronounce the final s - here this gives the 4 equally unstressed syllables veel-pa- ree-zeess. Even if you prefer to leave the final s unpronounced, you still say one syllable too many here, having pronounced the name correctly up to now.

If you want to revise this (which may be finicky) there are 16 examples -

@00:52 04:50 05:03 05:31 08:45 09:17 12:33 13:41 14:07 15:13 16:35 17:12 18:23 19:39 26:22 32:02 (The last example, @34:11 is OK because the extra "i" is disguised by the possessive 's.)

All the best
Martin

Hi

Section 20 is PL OK except for an unedited repeat of the name at 22:53 - the French text has this as "M. Molé", although my Kindle download had left off the accent in the translation.

Best regards
Martin
