COMPLETE solo [ENGLISH] To The Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf - hok

Post by Cori »

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://legamus.eu/blog/?p=937

To The Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf (*1882 - † 1941)
Plot summary: The large Ramsey family, plus house guests, visit the Isle of Skye at least twice.

The plot is not at all the point though, as this is a book exploring some ways that people think and feel and relate. There's insight into the world of childhood thought and emotion, and a variety of views of adult perceptions and preoccupations. It also poignantly describes how the passing of time affects people and places, in both the greatest and most trivial of ways.

I hope this doesn't make it sound 'difficult'! It's also fun, exasperating, wistful and reassuring. It's perhaps as close as a novel can come to the highly individual experience of looking at a painting.

About recording:
Set your recording software to:

Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz

Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!

I've been struggling with my other solo -- The Fairy Caravan -- because, and I know this is dreadful to say of dear Beatrix Potter, I've found it Rather Boring. (The guinea pig-centred first chapter is splendid, the rest is mostly sheep telling stories. )

I do intend to push through at some point! But, while procrastinating, I accidentally recorded the whole of To The Lighthouse.

And so here we are. 8-)

Hi Cori,

I guess you don't want to MC this yourself? I set up the MW for you. You can take over any time you want or leave it to me.
PM you the password in a sec.

Thank you, HP, I'd appreciate you looking after it, if that's okay. I've never been inducted as an MC here, and have even less idea of the process than at LibriVox. :D

Cori, am I right in understanding that you still need a DPL for this project?

If so, I put my hand up.

Sections 2 and 3 are PL OK Cori.

Thanks for doing the hard work for me - such complexity and subtlety!

Thanks, HP! And, thank you, thank you, Barbara! 8-)

Section 4 is ready ... do you prefer it if I put the link here, or are you happy grabbing it straight from the Magic Window?

Straight from the Magic Window is fine, Cori. BTW, I still can't login to the MW.

We clearly suffer from a lack of written instructions here.

The BC/Soloist is supposed to pass on the password for the MW. It's a new one for every project. But nobody can keep all that stuff in their head. I passed the password to Barbara.

And, thanks to you both, I've been able to mark Section 5 PL OK.

I never knew David Hume was enormously fat.

Ah, some brief instructions would be good, HP -- I'd completely missed that was on me to do. Sorry for the frustration, Barbara!

The most ridiculously long Chapter 17 (sections 7 and 8) is done, whew! And no, I'd not really thought about it, but Hume is indeed a little above the middle size (as Austen and others nicely put it). I wonder if his portrait painter's name was a coincidence or an inspiration ...

A dinnae ken.

But Section 6 has been marked PL OK.

Ages ago I toyed with the idea of reading some of Virginia Woolf's Essays and was guided to Legamus. I hope it flourishes.

Oooh, yes, do record some of those, Barbara! I can't be having all the Woolf fun ...

Section 9 is finished, which concludes the first book.
