COMPLETE [EN] Casebook of Sherlock Holmes by Conan Doyle-hok

Post by RuthieG »

The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes Part 1 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 – 1930)] (first published 1927)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://legamus.eu/blog/?p=778

And so, reader, farewell to Sherlock Holmes! These are positively the last stories. There is some disagreement as to their quality, and some claim that Conan Doyle was writing more experimentally, rather than to the conventional Sherlock Holmes formula. Not all the stories are narrated by the faithful Watson, and the stories are regarded as the darkest of the Holmes canon, with some unusual villains.

Please note: Section 5, The Adventure of the Three Gables, includes language which, though normal for the time it was written, is now regarded as highly unacceptable racial slurs. Anyone who finds this too offensive may wish to omit this story. Indeed, any listener who would understandably prefer to avoid my poor attempt at American accents, may prefer not to listen to a number of these stories. Conan Doyle seemed to like American villains ;). (Summary by Ruth Golding)

Hi Ruth,

I'm your MC for this project (now this really sound strange). I've added the link to the Google.doc MW to your post. Do you have a google ID, so I can make you editor for the spread sheet? Else please PM me an email address you wouldn't mind google to know.

Thank you, HP! :)

I don't know if I have a Google ID, to be honest. I certainly use Google docs, but I never understand the way Google works. I am PMing you the email address I use for Google docs.

I had been meaning to ask about track numbers. I see in the MW that Section 0 should be Track 0, but I had made it 1, and was going to carry on with +1 for each section. And now I am not sure if track numbers should be 2 digits anyway: 01, 02, etc.

I know that the LV validator makes section 0 = track 1, and they continue with just one digit 2, 3, 4 etc till they reach 10, 11 etc. but I don't know if that is just archive's way of doing it.

You are of course right about the track numbers. They should start with 1. It is corrected in the MW.
I tested the digit thing. It doesn't make any difference if they are 1 or 01. When I changed 1 to 01, it was still 1 under Win7. 1 digit should work with mp3 players, too.

Ah, thank you! That is good to know. :)

I can now edit the MW. Now for the fun stuff. (Puts on smoking jacket, lights pipe, and prepares to be the illustrious Mr. Holmes...)

Thank you, HP! :)

Section 01 uploaded. I have split the first story into two parts, as it was a bit of a squeeze to make the whole thing less than 74 minutes, and also there was a smashing cliff-hanger at a suitable spot in the middle. ;)

If you have no one else in mind, I do PL some time this week end. Is standard PL OK? If you prefer a native speaker PL, it would be best to ask over at LV.

I should be delighted if you would, HP, as long as it is OK with you. Standard PL will be fine. There are a couple of typos in the Gutenberg.au text anyway, so I had to check with other sources.

Section 02 uploaded, completing the first story.

Section 4 uploaded. This was a rattling good little story. A really evil villain, and Holmes at his most delightful.

Section 05 uploaded (at last). There is offensive racial language in this story, and I shall include a warning in the summary.
