AH, just got an idea, ... have to check it .... see, if we can find a way, that you will be able to see the peaks more clearly ... or even hear them ... just checking, if it works ....

This might work:
I will name the exact word, where the clicking appears. Then use on that ONE word in Audacity:

Effects/Equilizer: amplify the frequencies between 9000 and 10000 Hz (9-10 kHz) BIGTIME, as loud as possible
-----graphical equilizer is best instead of the one with the sliders .....

When you zoom-in, the waveform shows a significant distortion at exactly the point where the click is!
if you use this on a clicking word, you should be able to see or even HEAR the click, and then you can cut it out.

After that, choose the Equilizer again and INVERT the effect, so that the word sounds normal again!!!
Done.
Does it work for you? Please let me know!

Your idea is brilliant! Thank you! :D

I just tried it on the "my arm" click, and it worked like a charm. Now I've uploaded the file again; please (pleads) check it just one more time, to verify that the fix is ok. I used the Legamus uploader this time, since it now works fast again.

Link to file: http://upload.legamus.eu/simple/files/a ... gerald.mp3
Length: 27311244 bytes (26.046 MB) — Duration: 1706 seconds (0:28:26) — Bitrate: 128 kbps

Once the 9-10Khz range was maxed, I had no trouble at all hearing the click as well as seeing the big spike on the wave form, even at lower zoom levels.

Works fine! Click is gone. Just not sure, if you inverted the effect again, to make the word sound normal again. But since it is just one word ... who cares?

by the way, to invert the effect of the equilizer there is just a little button in Audacity, you don't have to set the curve again. And you can save the settings and will always be able to load them again! Very handy.
Great, so you can hear and edit the clicks now! :D

I'm pretty sure I did, but at this point I have to agree. We've pretty much beaten poor "my arm" to death. I've re-played it so many times in the past day that it will never sound normal to me again anyway...

Yup. My Audacity (I use the Mac version) has "Flatten" and "Invert" buttons on the graphic EQ window. Flatten puts everything back on the horizontal, and Invert flips it 180.

I'll be back soon with Chapter 3 :)

Chapter 03
1:03 ...nine in the morning and *click* long past midnight, ...
2.47 ...the cars from New *click* York are parked ...
3.20 ...The lights *click* grow brighter as the earth...
4.44 ...bore them out to *click*Long Island ...
5.00 ...by the number of *click*young Englishmen...
20.20 ...drift coolly out of *click*nowhere and buy ...
25.35 so are we. ... *click*well, we are almost...

It is really astonishing how you almost effortlessly read "word perfect". There is so few to mention, besides some clicks ... see, if you can fix them. :D

I make plenty of mistakes while reading. I just do a PL pass of my own before I upload :) It makes the job easier for everyone, including me. But as you've seen, a few bloopers get through even so.

Anyway, here's the new file with the click fixes. I hope I got them all. I could hear about half of them without boosting the high frequencies, but it takes concentration, and I would never have noticed them if you hadn't pointed them out. There were a couple that were pretty tricky even with the frequency boost. I'm not completely sure I did those right.

Chapter 4 is ready for PL:

Link to file: http://upload.legamus.eu/simple/files/i ... gerald.mp3
Length: 35460613 bytes (33.818 MB) — Duration: 2216 seconds (0:36:56) — Bitrate: 128 kbps

Some notes on this one:

The Gutenberg Australia text consistently misspells Meyer Wolfsheim's surname as Wolfshiem. My pronunciation follows the correct spelling.

In the sentence near the end, beginning "I saw them one spring in Cannes and later in..." the word "Deauville" is missing after "in" in the Gutenberg Australia text (see the text on the Russian site for corroboration). I read it as if it were there. It occurs starting at 31:17 in the recording.

At around 32:47, I couldn't resist singing the 4 lines FSF quotes from "The Sheik of Araby," which was a big hit in 1922 (the year the novel is set in) and remains one of the great jazz tunes of the 20th century. You'll find renditions on youtube by performers as diverse as Benny Goodman, Leon Redbone, Joanne Castle (the renowned honky-tonk pianist from the Lawrence Welk Show), Fats Domino, the Beatles, and several more. I had a lot of fun listening to them.

chapter 04

13.27 ...*click*He wouldn't say another word...
17.07...*click* Gatsby took an arm of each of us...
21.21 ...ve you *click* known Gatsby for a long time?" I...
21.46...*click* I hadnt been looking at them...

Not much to do this time, since you stated all the necessary corrections of the poor transcripted gutenberg version. :D

Hi, here's the updated Chapter 4 file. I think I got all the clicks. These ones weren't hard at all, if I got them right :)

yeah, the clicks are okay this way, some are not totally gone, but smoothed a bit, so that is okay, too!
PL okay. :D
Just please think of updating the link in the magic window as well, as soon as you upload a new version of a file for "spot PL", THANKS!

I am sorry, but I think, you might have to edit this... if I am not mistaken the composer was Ted Snyder and he only died in 1965, therefore the tune is not yet PD
