I know. Colds only happen when one got the perfect moment for recording, don't they?

Cat cannot record as soon as she wanted to, so she is "liberating" this text into a group project. I started to set up the MW and to edit the first post's data. Readers welcome!

Hello All!

Yes, it's true, I can not finish this project! The MW is fully and completely set up! I've entered information about the project file names and the ID3 Tags onto the bottom of the Chapters, which I've set up as Google Documents for the convenience of the reader.
I also plan to re-write the summary :)
Please people, now is a good time to volunteer! :D

Hi,

It looks like this project was abandoned well over a year ago. I love the novel, and I'd be happy to revive this as a solo project if it's ok with everyone involved.

I'm not exactly new here... I've recorded a bunch of stuff at LibriVox over the past few months and some stories in the Lovecraft collection here just recently ...but this would be my first solo project.

Cheers,
Martin

Hi Martin, that sounds great, so you want to do this project as a SOLO?
If Viktor (the MC) has nothing against it, I would set up a new Magic Window for you, and would ask you to fill up the missing information, like a summary ...
happy reading!
Ramona

Sure! Now that we have a better MW, I'm all for it. And I don't even have to do it myself. Luxury!

Welcome on board, Martin, and thanks for going ahead with this project!
For uploads, you can use ge.tt or our new uploader. I can send you the access data through a private message.

Joggler, do you still want to be DPL?

Thanks, guys. I'm eager to get started. Yes, please PM me with the login info for the upload site.

I'll gladly provide a summary and any other details still missing, but :? I don't know how to update the page content. Is that explained somewhere? Or if that's not for me to do, I could send the copy to one of you. Please let me know what the procedure is.

Thanks,
Martin

Hi Martin, you can only edit the threads you opened yourself ... but since you adopt this project, you unfortunatelly can't edit the first-post by yourself. But that's where MCs take their place (or other admins of the forum). Just post the missing data in a regular reply and we (the admins or the MC ) will enter them into the first-post, update it, so to speak. :D
But the missing data are just minor changes ... there is more work with filling the Magic Window ... and THAT fortunatelly can be done just by yourself --- as soon as it is set! 8-)
(First thing in the morning I will set it! Promised! - I will keep you updated via PM)
Regards!
Ramona

The new MW looks great! :D

I've been able to go in and do a few edits: added a section row for the Introduction and numbered the chapters. Everything's working fine. Now I just need the login info for the Legamus upload site, and I think I'm good to go :)

Okay, I just set the preface count for the sections, since you want to do the preface/introduction.
I also moved the thread to "Readers Found". I know, Viktor is pretty busy right now, so I did it ...hope he is fine with it. 8-)
I also adjusted the first-post with the intro/outro text and such ...
I am not sure, if Joggler is still DPL of this project, ...
if not, I would volunteer otherwise ...
Happy recording!

Oh, thanks! That's great!
Just the link to the uploaded file and the duration is enough to be posted here.
The deleting link is for you, if you just noticed, that there is something wrong with your file and you want it to be removed ...

Viktor:
Mmh, I am not sure, how to handle this.
Shall we wait on a reply of Joggler? ... or should I just go on, and kick in until Joggler returns?
Regards

Oh, ok then. Just the file links and durations from now on.

I went ahead and updated the MW, so the links and durations are also there. I hope that's ok.

Of course it is! That's what the Magic Window is for .. ;)
Great done!
I am just a bit confused. Where can I find the introduction text? It is not part of the online text at gutenberg Australia, we linked to ...do you use a different source?

The source I used for the Introduction was linked to in the old MW. I downloaded it and all the other chapters a few days before the old MW went offline. Those files are probably still on the server, but if not I can send you a copy.

There's another copy here, which I just found by googling:

http://fitzgerald.narod.ru/gatsby/gg-intro.html

But this one doesn't have the little verse by "Thomas Parke D'Invilliers" (who's actually Fitzgerald) at the end. It's the epigram for the whole book, it's perfect, and it would be a shame to leave it out.

I am not sure, if the russia source is a valid one for this project, Viktor has to judge this ... but I agree, that it would be a shame to leave the introduction behind. Let's see, what the experts say ...
just keep on recording. The other chapters are not in question anyway 8-)

I didn't read the Introduction from the Russian link; like I said, I downloaded it from a link in the old MW. It was a downloadable RTF file. There was one for each of the other chapters too. I downloaded all of them before the old MW was replaced by the new one.

Those files were very nicely prepared, I don't know by whom, with the Legamus intro and outro text and the word count thoughtfully added to each file. Very convenient. I figured it would be ok to read from those, since that was clearly the intention when the project was first set up.

But there was also a note at the bottom of the old MW to the effect that the text for Introduction remained to be verified for usability; as far as I can see, this was never done. I have to admit, I sort of overlooked that when I decided to record it. I think it's likely that the Russian source was used for that RTF, and the Australian Gutenberg text was used for all the others.

The Introduction is an interesting and touching piece of writing, but FSF wrote it for the 1934 edition of the novel, not the original one, and it isn't really germane to it. So I don't think we'd be losing much if we dropped it.

The 4-line epigram by his alter-ego D'Invilliers, which appeared in the original edition and is what I'm really concerned with keeping in, is at the end of the RTF for the Introduction; but I see now that it also appears at the top of the Gutenberg text. So it turns out there's no problem with that.

I propose that we not let the Introduction hold us up, and just take it out of the MW. We can always revisit that later, if there's reason to. I'll hold on to the .mp3 file just in case.

But I'm not comfortable with going ahead with more sections until the question of who will PL them is settled. I appreciate your offer to do it, and I suggest that if the originally designated person doesn't chime in in the next day or two, and we're not overruled by senior project management (and we probably won't be) ...you just go ahead and step into the role. What do you think?

Martin

Hi crowwings and Martin

Viktor and I discussed the intro and it's from the copy of the book that I personally own. Copyright 1936 by F Scott Fitzgerald. We didn't find a PD version of that introduction online anywhere online, so we deleted it to play safe. (PM him for more details as I no longer have the PM's)

The other things that Martin is reading off are docs that I creates for this when it was a group project from the Gutenburg Australia copy, so that is the text link :)

And yes, in those docs, I included the intro/outro, tags and file names and a word count for each section, to make it easier for someone to read it :D

Edit: and, if it makes you feel better Martin, I can PL these until the person who is DPL (was it Joggler?) get's back in touch. That ensures a speedy PL either way, so you only need to worry about recording it :)

Hi Cat! Great work done to prepare all the chapters!
I already volunteered in doing the PL, if Joggler isn't jumping in again.
But since this is originally your project and you might be an English native, which I am not, then it might be even better, if you listen to the files...?

Any way, you don't have to worry about having no Pler, Martin! Its a great book! And there will always be very enthusiastic listeners to such a smooth and calming vioce as yours.
I listened into some minutes of your recordings, and there isn't much to do for a PLer anyway, you read very accurate and with almost no technical troubles at all ...
So don't worry about having no PLer, even without Joggler!!! :D
It's more a question of: who would you prefere as your DPL!!! ;)
No prob to keep on recording!

And I did understand your reply, that you used the prepared text by Cat. With a project like Legamus or Librivox you always have to keep in mind to be on the save side of copyrights and having pd references and sources and such. There was never any problem with the Australian source for all the chapters ... but wherever the intro came from originally, as long as we find a proper source of it somewhere on the net, it would have been fine to be used, too.
Since Cat cleared that now, ...

Its easier for me to remove a first chapter than for you, Martin. You would have to rename all the sections again. I can do it in a different and easier way. 8-)
We will keep the intro in store, nevertheless. Might be, that we'll find a proper source somewhere ...!
Regards
Ramona
