About sound effects: I'm not a friend of bans in general, and Legamus should be allowed to experiment. Cat, if you manage to convince us that sound effects would be good for this project, I'd be for it! I don't know the LV argumentation, but let met tell you what I see as arguments against it.

Apart from all aesthetic arguments, there is a practical thing. Sound effects tend to overlay voices. It is much easier to add sound effects to a recording than to remove them. What would certainly be possible is to make one version without sound effects, publish it, and then add some. After all, anyone on the web is allowed to do so, so why shouldn't we?

In the classic audio play you have no read stage directions, only sound effects. In this text, it somehow feels weird to me to add some sound effects and yet have extensive stage directions... take the long sentence of my part, Preen, at the end: a couple of lines interspersed with "(sips)". Should one introduce a sipping sound? Should I do one myself? Plenty of questions, and the result would only be partial, no?

In short, I don't see yet how one could draw a convincing line between an audio book and an audio play.

The main difference between this and, say, a radio play is that a radio play is written to be only audio. The people who write them know that the listener won't be seeing anything, so Stage Directs on how it should be acted out are pointless. A play like this was meant to be seen, so most of the stage directions (the ones that aren't adverbs) are abput how one should act it out. Because the listener can't see anyone acting it (and we only voice-act it), the stage directions are nessessary to set the scene and to say what's happening, that would be seen on a stage.

I wasn't talking about ambient sound effects, such as adding rain over it all if it says (It was a rainy day) or something like that, as they would distort and muffle the voices, which is the most important part. I was talking about incidental sound effect, like when it says Miss Isit drops a glass, there should be the sound of a glass being dropped. And when it says (there is a scream) at the end, someone would scream.

The (sip) doesn't mean make a sipping noise. The noise when people sip is often so small that it wouldn't actually be heard if you went to see it on stage. It is an action, and so should be read by the narrator.

The main reason the LV doesn't do sound effects is that it's difficult to find out the PDness of them, especially since LV normally has 50 Dramatic Works open at once, and only a few very busy MCs who are willing to check up on everything, so it's impractically and easier to blanket ban them. Every few years (as I've seen) someone either on the forums, or in a review on Archive, complains about this.

These are all very good points.

As for the PDness, I think that would be doable. What we'd need is an exhaustive list of sounds, where for each sound you tell us where it came from: either you or another Legamus reader recorded it, or you give a link to the source. Of course, archives of PD sounds would be best suited for sources. Some, but not all sounds on the Free Sound Project are CC0. All sounds on www.pdsounds.org look like they should be eligible (the latter site is founded by someone who liked LV :D ). And then, one has to be careful with projects where the founder does not understand PD (that site claims that its sounds are PD, yet tries to restrict their usage).

To have our files re-usable at a maximum, though - that's our goal by putting them under PD/CC0, no? - I'd still suggest to have a base version without any sounds, and then one version with them. So people can take the original version and add sound effects on their own, instead of being forced to edit the other version.

This is just my opinion. What do the others say?

Hi, I'm ready to record the host, but does anybody know how to pronounce the name 'Vaile'? Like 'vile', I suppose?

That was fun, but what is this play about? Are we supposed to be able to work out who the murderer was?

Cat, Yes, I'll do it later today. It seems you get the code before the file is actually uploaded, I'll be more patient next time! Phil

My two pennorth on sound effects. The librivox guidelines http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Music_Rules seem to be ambiguous. First they say no music and sound effects and then there is a whole set of guidelines for using music and sound effects in special projects (which I guess means projects that include music and sound effects).

It seems to me there is a difference between, say, adding background music to a play (which is adding something that is not written) and using a sound effect to replace a stage direction for a sound (e.g. screaming instead of saying 'a scream was heard'). I can't see any objection to the latter at all, unless the sound effect is created with a copyright recording.

This is the Maid: http://upload.legamus.eu/simple/files/D ... s_maid.mp3

Cat, it's a bit low in volume but I suppose you'll be able to amplify it as needed. Otherwise, I could give it another go with different mic settings. Let me know! (Also let me know if I have mispronounced anything ;) )

Here's Preen. One sentence is repeated, for the two possible pronounciations of "Wrathie".

This is a FLAC file, you can load it into Audacity like a MP3 file. The difference is that no lossy compression has taken place yet, the file is slightly larger. If there is any problem, of course I can send a MP3.
