COMPLETE [EN] The Testament of Beauty - R. Bridges - vik

Post by algy pug »

The Testament of Beauty by Robert Bridges (1844 - 1930)
The Testament of Beauty is a long poem in four books, and was the last work of the English Poet Laureate, Robert Bridges. It was first published in 1929. Like The Prelude by William Wordsworth and The Divine Comedy, the poem is a voyage of self-discovery, in which the author seeks to resolve philosophical and spiritual issues raised in his earlier works, particularly in the sonnet sequence, The Growth of Love (1898). It is written in a style that Bridges described as "loose alexandrines", which are constructed on the basis of syllables rather than accents, a metrical structure developed by the author himself. The work also features Bridges' idiosyncratic approach to the spelling of English. (Summary by XXX)
Text source: There is no readily available online text. I will be reading from a facsmile copy of the original 1929 edition.(please only read from this text!)

Prooflistener: Martin Geeson has kindly agreed to act a DPL. Word perfect PL required.

Hi

Profuse apologies!

I've been getting reliable email alerts so far on legamus, but for the first time I didn't get one to flag up your latest file.

I'll be listening to Section 1 shortly.

Best regards

Hi - here are PL notes on Section 2 -

@ 10:41 - ther wil be speedily also an end of Life! - read as speedily be also Line 500

@ 10:54 - bravely forsook their crowded nestes in the snow - read as (monosyllabic) nests Line 503
[Bridges uses an archaic diminutive to achieve a disyllable - nestës [NEST-iz) - which is metrically necessary. This is a revival of the old Dutch termination -je, as in koekjes/cookies. Here it colours the meaning as 'cosy little nests'.]

@ 11:33 - ...and yet for all their vows, - and omitted Line 513

@ 11:45 - they wer impell'd as madly ... - read as imperilled Line 517

@ 14:35 - ...true Wisdom's panoply.... - mis-said as panAlopy Line 562

All the best

Hi

Section 4 - One minuscule difference to note:

@ 05:40 (phenomena) of individuat selfhood... - read as individual

In the context, Binyon is emphasising individuation as the outcome of a process of striving, rather than the neutral status of being an individual. (His spelling-system similarly produces 'separat' and 'corporat' in II, 261, 266.)

Best wishes
