In het begin van het boek zegt een van de vrouwen in Jan Campert’s leven tegen hem dat hij ‚een te slordig hart’ heeft. „Ik hoor altijd alleen maar verhalen over vrouwen en jou, zei Lucie, ik hoor zelden iets over je werk.” De schrijver moet dat beamen: „Ik hèb een slordig beheer over mijn hart gevoerd…”
In de loop van het boek komt, bijna terloops, de uitbraak van de oorlog op het toneel. Campert beschrijft zijn eerste reacties daarop. „Met elke vezel ben ik verbonden aan dit volk. Elke siddering die eroverheen vlaagt voel ik. Ik kàn mij daaraan niet onttrekken.”
Jan Campert is het meest bekend geworden door zijn verzetsgedicht „De achttien dooden”. Hij werd in 1942 opgepakt vanwege zijn activiteiten in het verzet, en stierf in 1943 in het concentratiekamp Neuengamme.
