Franz Werfel

Post by Availle » Thu 14. Jan 2016, 15:05

Once upon a long ago, when Hokus invited me here, I said: Nah, there's enough to read on LV, and I don't really do stray recordings... I still think so, mostly...

So, the only reason I am here - and the Weisse Rose pamphlets were kind of a test for it - is to read Franz Werfel's Musa Dagh. I have read it some 15 years ago if memory serves, and I couldn't finish it then (for various reasons), but I think now is the right time to try again and get a free audio version out there.

Can anybody help me find an etext for this book? Google has it, but of course, the editions of 1930 are "snippet view" only *bugger*

Thanks!

Reading from a carbon copy not an option? Werfel just became PD this year - might take a while 'til his stuff gets put on the internet...

There might be the problem of later editions and overzealous editors...

Besides, do I need to go into detail how hard (i.e., expensive) it is to get foreign books in Japan?

Sorry, I thought you already had a copy (since you've read it before) :)

I had a look at my library, but they don't offer an ebook version and the dead tree editions are from the 90ies onwards...

but it should be coming online on the german project gutenberg soon... I just checked gaga, it's listed under 'finished' (1559) "Die vierzig Tage des Musa Dagh", Werfel, Franz; beendet: 25.11.2015) which means it has run through all proofreading stages and has been sent to the project for publication... :) I reckon it's going up with the next update (no new texts since before christmas)...

I did own a hardcopy - another modern edition. Also, in my move, only some 300 of my more than 1000 books made it over here. One of the "get rid" criteria was "easy to repurchase"...

Anyway, thanks for the info! If it's on the list for gutenberg.de, this is excellent! :D They don't have any Werfels there yet obviously, and the one they said they did and was locked until the end of the year has now a release date "in January". Everybody's busy I guess... So am I, and I don't think I'd want to start reading before it's getting a bit warmer here anyway.

Thanks for your help Julia! 8-)

You're most welcome :) I might sign up as DPL if you'll have me when you get going... I have never read Werfel and I enjoy your voice ;)

You are most welcome! But I warn you, the book is looong, and it is... not quite easy reading, obviously.

I have just found that the book has been uploaded to gutenberg.de, together with a number of other of his writings (eine blassblaue Frauenschrift for example, also quite famous, isn't it?).

I will get this book started soon-ish, but I want to finish most of my other commitments here and on Librivox first.

Hi Ava

As a hard-core non-believer, I thought that you might enjoy recording The Song of Bernadette.

You may be interested in reading the following anti-modernist article by a red-necked Catholic cleric, in which Werfel is subjected to damning - literally - criticism.
http://catholicism.org/sentimental-theology.html

Nice touch in the last footnote - apparently Werfel made a deathbed conversion to Catholicism, so he wasn't so bad, after all.

Personally, I think that Werfel was a decent and courageous man.

Cheers

Okay, I'm finally ready to go here - only took an extra year and a bit... - but I have a question as to the setup:

The online version on gutenberg.de says it's 19 chapters. However, some of them are MASSIVE, so that won't work. Is it okay if I don't know the correct number of sections beforehand, meaning: can we add/delete sections as I go along?

DPL still wanted! :D

Yes, it is possible to add and delete sections from the MW as you go. I think you can even do that as a reader. Or at least your MC can.

The chapter breaks on GutenbergDE not always are the authors chapter breaks. They add or delet them for their html pages.

Great, thanks Hokus!

good to know about the chapter breaks as well.
I'll probably set it up some time before/over next weekend.

My DPL projects over at librivox have slowed down a lot and are also close to the finishing line, so I'd be happy to DPL for you - it eases my guilt for not finally finishing my own projects :?
