COMPLETE[ENG]Fumes of Formation-Amanda McKittrick Ros-hok

Post by Newgatenovelist »

Fumes of Formation by Amanda McKittrick Ros (*1860 - † 1939)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://legamus.eu/blog/?p=927
Amanda McKittrick Ros's poems and prose are unique, and her determination to write saw her publish two novels and two volumes of verse in her lifetime. Whether you like it or loathe it, her style is inimitable. In her own words: 'This inventive production was hatched within a mind fringed with Fumes of Formation, the Ingenious Innings of Inspiration and Thorny Tincture of Thought.'

To a prospective MC: this won't be a terribly fast moving project. It took months to find an affordable copy of the book, and I'm more than happy to sit on the launch pad for weeks.

To a prospective DPL: please make sure you know what you're getting into! Ros's cult following is based on her reputation as Northern Ireland's worst poet and novelist. I'm not certain I would disagree with that assessment.

A general question for the admins: In four poems, there is a blank where a potentially rude word is omitted. It's fully omitted - there is no first letter to provide a hint. In three of the four instances I'm confident what it is and have no problem saying it. I'm struggling to work out with 100% certainty the fourth. Her poems do not always rhyme or scan, and her particular moral outlook (and therefore what she censored) was, shall we say, stringent, all of which make it a bit more difficult to determine what she was too coy to write. I do have a guess as to what it is, but if I'm right, I don't know why she blanked it out. So, partly in the spirit of her own censorship, and partly in the spirit of the groups that have read her works aloud from the Inklings onward, would it be acceptable to put a bleep or a bang or some other noise in where the censored word is represented by dashes on the page?

Hi Erin,

I'm your MC for this project. The password comes in a a PM soon.

About the left out words:
I would not add words that the author had left out. She had reasons for that.
I would just pause a moment at these places. You could also make a little cough, add rustling of paper, a beep or some such thing. Sound effects are OK here, as long as they are clearly pd. If you want to use an effect, it's best to produce and record it yourself.

That was quick! Thank you!

I was hoping I could use a little sound effect. That's good news. I'll start experimenting. :)

Sections 6, 9, 10, 13, 16 and 17 are ready, so any prospective PLer can see what they're letting themselves in for. I'm moving quite slowly, but at least this is moving now.

Hi,

I was curious and had a bit of time so I listened to the sections. 1, 3, 5, 6, 9, 13, 16 and 17 are PL:OK. Lovely read. :D
I don't have enough time to commit as DPL, though. Sorry. :)

I hope you find someone soon!

Do you know someone in real life could ask? Or you could post over at LV in Volunteers Wanted: Other Projects for a DPL.

Thank you, Julia! You're a brave soul, and that's eight minutes of awful poetry that somebody else won't have to suffer through!

Hokus, I'll post on LV shortly. I hadn't yet as it's taken me such a time to get going on the book. The DPLs I've worked with live in the US or I'd have asked them, but I'm sure someone will respond to the call for help! The lure of bad poetry is strong.

It's different but not bad
Not that I know anything about literature, though.

Ha ha, 'different' is one way of putting it!

Thanks again. I've posted a notice on LV, so we'll see who else takes the bait! I did wonder if this would have to be done by a series of PLs who could only take so much. The next book will be better, promise!

Hi Hokuspokus,

The awful poetry might have a DPL! Barbara2 has expressed interest on the Librivox thread, so if she swings by here, could you please validate her account, or add her, or whatever might be required on the official admin side of things?

Hello Legamus! I hope my first post succeeds.

I have offered to DPL Erin's readings of the Amanda McKittrick Ros oeuvre. I am hoping that these poems will rival in hopelessness those of the celebrated William MacGonagall*.

Best,

Barbara

That ninety lives have been taken away
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember’d for a very long time.

Thank you Victor!

And thank you, Barbara, for showing up. It's going to be a wild ride. I've sent you a PM with the MW password - just let me know if it doesn't come through.

I'm actually rather fond of McGonagall. I can't think of anybody else with the nerve to put 'Your cow must die!' into a poem.

You may enjoy section 25 of this collection, which has her most famous lines:

Holy Moses! Have a look!
Flesh decayed in every nook!
Some rare bits of brain lie here
Mortal loads of beef and beer...
