solo [english] The Well of Loneliness by Radcylffe Hall - vik

Post by ashleighjane »

The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall (*1880 - † 1943)
The Well of Loneliness is an early lesbian novel. It follows the story of Stephen, given a masculine name as her parents had expected to have a son. Although this novel has perhaps not aged well, at the time of publication it increased the visibility of lesbians (will update this summary once finished recording)...

Hello ashleighjane, I'm happy to be your MC. Do you have an idea who might be a proof-listener?

Hello Ashleighjane,

I have two questions, in no particular order:

-could I just check the spelling of her name? I believe it generally has an E on the end. It sounds small, but it's usually easier to catch these things at the start of a project!

-might I ask what kind of PLing you're looking for?

Hi Erin, thank you! You're right, it should have the e on the end. We will blame australian gutenberg for that as they missed it off

I'm just looking for standard PL, no need for word perfect :D

If you'd like for me to PL, I can. I usually follow along with the text; some of what I note is standard fare that needs to be changed like missing lines or repetitions, and some of it comes under the heading of 'stuff I noted' but would be at your discretion. That's often something like pronunciation. As we've not worked together before it's one of those things that we'd work out as we go along. How does that sound?

That would be great if you could! I'm more than happy for things like pronunciation to be flagged. I'm not again 'word perfect' pl, actually. I just don't ask for it as i don't like plers to feel pressures to catch everything

Ah, I understand. I don't like to put anyone out either, so I tend only to ask for standard PL.

I'm okay to PL, so if you want to get recording, go right ahead!

Uff, how late were you up last night? My goodness!

I've made two notes for chapter 1. These are both things I noticed only because I was reading along, so it's entirely up to you to what, if anything, you'd like to do - if you want me to note stuff like this, great, but if it's too strict, that's okay too (if that's the case, flip it to PL OK). As I said, we'll figure out what what works for you as we go along!

0.59-1.02
...self-assurance without arrogance [heard ignorance]...

7.30-7.37, check pronunciation
And seeing her grief, Sir Philip hid his chagrin, and he fondled the baby and examined its fingers.

These are the two main links I use to double check pronunciations. The first is based on the free version of the Oxford English Dictionary. The second doesn’t have quite the same clout, but it does tend to have more words in its database. They give the same pronunciation as each other, but I’m giving both links as in the past some readers’ computers weren’t always able to play one or the other.

The notes for chapter 2 below fall under the heading of 'things I noticed because I was reading along'. Do with them what you will!

You're off to a strong start. It usually takes me an age to record as much as you've managed in a week, so well done!
