I'm having difficulty uploading. I've tried both my Legamus password and my Magic Window password but neither work for the uploading screen.

Should I not mention the translator? I know I named him at the start of every section of Within a Budding Grove. I think he should be mentioned at least at the start of Section 00 and at the end of the final section.

The uploader has its own password, I'm sending you a Private Message for it.

Sure! You can just mention him each time, like in Within a Budding Grove, if there is no reason against it.

Thank you Martin for PLing! Moving to Readers Found.

I have now uploaded Dedications (Like one of Chaucer's pilgrims, I'm afraid I speak French "as it is spoken in Stratford on Bow"!) and Section 1.

I take it that Martin is ill. I haven't seen him ranting on Facebook lately about the evil Conservative Party (despite the amount there has been to rant about!). I hope he gets well soon. There's no hurry as this is definitely a long term project and I am happy to keep sending sections to wait for proof listening until he's back. However, could somebody do a quick check that my sections are usable from a technical perspective? If I've mispronounced Charlus or Villeparisis that can wait to be fixed more easily than having the wrong recording levels and having to do everything all over again.
Thanks

Hi Andrew,

I'm sorry I haven't seen the rants. Perhaps criticising the current cabinet has become a full-time job for Martin.

What are you thinking of with tech specs? I've downloaded some of your files and run them through Checker. Here's what I found:

Section 1: the bit rate should be constant and 128. Also, not on the technical side, but a small niggly thing (I'm quite a pedant once you set me going): in the tags, in the 'track title' field, I see 'Section 01', with the placeholding 0 included, and sections 2 and 3 don't have that.

Sections 2 and 3: the bit rate should be constant and 128.

All sections have a few peaks that seem a little bit high. That's just an observation, not a technical thing that needs to be altered.

I can't get the dedications and section 4 to download as mp3s, despite having just restarted my pc. I've had this problem with Librivox files before. It sometimes resolves itself if I leave it for a few hours, so I'll have another crack at it tomorrow.

Is this what you had in mind with someone having a quick check of the files? If there's anything I can do, just post.

That is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. Sorry to bother you again but what should I do to change the bit rate to a constant 128?

As for Martin, I am connected with him on Facebook. He often posted in the past but hasn't posted anything in a long time. I know he has had health problems so I just hope he's OK.

I hope he's okay, too.

Are you using Audacity? I'm using the most recent version, and I'll tell you how I go about it and see if any of this looks familiar.

In the upper left corner, click on 'file', and from the menu that appears, go down to 'export'.

A new menu will appear to the right. The fourth item on the list is 'export audio...'. Click that.

A box will pop up with where you want to save it and what file name you want to assign it. Immediately below the white line where you enter the file name, there's another line that says 'save as type'. If you click on that, a list will drop down. 'mp3 files' is fifth on that list.

When you select that, it will show 'format options' underneath. The first item is 'bit rate mode'. Select the fourth item, the one on right, 'constant'.

The item immediately below that is 'quality'. Click on that line and another list will drop down. Select '128 kbps'.

I hope some of this is the same on your computer. If it's any consolation, the new Audacity messed up someone else's bit rate, too, on another project, and it wouldn't recognise my mic when I first set it up. It seems it has various little kinks to work out.

If none of this matches up to what you're using, don't be afraid to say so. I have an older version of Audacity on a permanently offline pc, and I can fire that up and see if the bit rate looks any different on that.

Thank you very much. The five files are now re-uploaded at 128 constant and the Magic Window revised accordingly.

The bit rate has been sorted, and sections 0-4 all look within normal volume range, bit rate and the rest of it.

With section 4, the download link has become a little bit jumbled at the beginning. What's currently in the MW is:
http://%20https//upload.legamus.eu/simple/files/VJP6bVUC/theguermantesway_04_proust.mp3

If you edit it so that the beginning is pared back to 'https:', it should work:
https://upload.legamus.eu/simple/files/ ... proust.mp3

Does that make sense? If not, give me a shout.

Section 6 uploaded.

I'm still struggling to get Section 4 uploaded in a way that it can be listened to. It says https: in the Magic Window but when I click it it adds %20 before it and can't open.

Hi Andrew,

I'm sticking my oar in - tell me to go away if need be!

I don't know if this will work, but I'll tell you what I do at times. I can't always get my links to copy from the uploader page. When that is the case, I sometimes resort to the following: I hold down control then click the link so it opens in a new tab (be aware the mp3 it will start playing). I then highlight the link directly at the top, press control + C (for copy), then in the right slot in the MW press control + V to paste it in. As I said, I don't know if this will help, but it's a workaround I have to use now and then.

Still no luck with uploading Section 4 so it will open. I'm wondering whether giving the file a slightly different name might be a way to get around it but it needs to be a name that can be found. With Martin not around, I have no proof listener, so there's no urgency.

Sections 7 and 8 uploaded.
