What do we know about Project Gutenberg Europe?

To my shame, I didn't even know it existed, but it doesn't seem to work for me. I get "Could not connect to database server".

EDITED TO ADD: Used with care Project Gutenberg Australia and Project Gutenberg Canada should be very useful, of course.

Project Gutenberg Europe is follower of Project Gutenberg philosophy, focused primarily on digitizing European cultures, under European copyright laws.

Project Gutenberg is the oldest producer of free electronic books (eBooks or etexts) on the Internet. The collection of more than 17.000 eBooks was produced by hundreds of volunteers. Most of the Project Gutenberg eBooks are older literary works that are in the public domain in the United States.

So it's like PG in the US, except all of this is PD in Europe. Makes it easier to sort out, but I have not yet found something that is there but not in the other PG.

For Portuguese I use

It's a government-run project with PD works in Portuguese and other languages (even though most of the "other languages" stuff is taken from Gutenberg anyway.)

The National Library of Portugal is digitalizing all their rare documents collection, which is amazing. I hope they get past the maps and photographs soon, though - that's most of what they have. But there are a few books as well.

Not all the books are PD, it is more like a library for students who are lazy to go to The Library

Yes, for the moment we only do books, that can't be done at LV. There might be a time, when we have the same resources and routine. Then we can think about pre-1923 books here, too. But until then it's easier, more practical and saver to do pre-1923 books at LV.
I'll add a line to the first post.

Welcome, chigozie. Just wanted to point out that only a few of those books fall into our scope, but you found them already yourself

There are also some Creative Commons-licensed works in that list: Lessig, Doctorow... Definitely outside of our scope, but maybe interesting for a sub- or sister project. Also, there are already several audiobook versions of CC texts out there.
