David Herbert Richards Lawrence (11 September 1885 – 2 March 1930) was an English novelist, poet, playwright, essayist, literary critic and painter. His collected works represent an extended reflection upon the dehumanising effects of modernity and industrialisation. When is the deadline, and can someone please advise me on the pronunciation of the surname 'Bodoin'? I'm guessing it's 'Bod 1' sounding a bit Frenchy?

Hi, I have an artistic question, to do with the accents in the piece I have chosen ("Things").

The characters in the story are all American, and I have been using an American accent for them throughout -- for one thing, this helps to distinguish between narration and dialogue (my own accent is dreadfully English). However, in the story they move to Europe for 12 years, and at the end of this there is a line of narration as follows:

The Melvilles had an entirely English accent and manner--almost--a little Italian and French here and there.

This immediately follows a line of dialogue, and it sounds pretty silly to use the American accent here. So, I could

• use English throughout (but this also sounds weird to me, because they start off in America, and as I said it is useful to have the distinction between narration and dialogue)

• or American throughout and ignore the line

,

• or shift to be gradually more English during the time they spend in Europe (I'm not sure that there is enough dialogue for this to be clear, and indeed I don't think my accents are good enough to pull it off)

• or something else

What I've ended up doing below is American for all accents apart from the one directly before the "entirely english" phrase... (at 19:35) This avoids it sounding quite so jarring to my ears, but doesn't really make much sense if you think about it.

Finally, my American accent is a little shaky anyway (see, for example, 26:25)

Hi Chigozie

Ashleigh Jane will PL this for you. However, I had a brief listen, in particular to the exchange at 26:35. To a non-American the accents certainly did not sound jarring.

Speaking as a non-expert, I believe that there is a great a variety of accents on the American continent as in the UK, but the regional differences are more subtle. For most of us non-Americans, the "American accent" is a poorly executed version of the way we think the people talk in Texas. The accents of people living in the north east corner of the US, from where your characters in the story come from, are particularly elusive for the non- American.

I liked the reading very much. I though the conversational delivery really captured the episodic nature of the character's lives.

Perhaps you would like to read one (or more) of the other stories.
